If you’ve been using Android for a while, you’re probably used to long-pressing the power button to (logically) turn your phone on or off. Long-pressing the button while the phone was turned on used to allow you to restart it, lock it down, or signal an emergency. (For a brief period during Android 10, it could also be used to take screenshots.) So you might have been surprised if, after upgrading to Android 12, you discovered that long-pressing the power button did not bring up the shutdown menu but instead activated Google Assistant. This is something that came with the new version of the operating system, and it’s supposed to be a good thing. In this article, you will learn how to fix Android 12 power button to turn it off.
You can access the power and emergency menus by simultaneously pressing the power and volume up buttons — which may be useful if you rarely (if ever) need to shut down your phone. But if you’d rather have less awkward access to the emergency button or want to go back to being able to shut down or restart your phone by long-pressing the power button, don’t worry — you can change it back. To fix Android 12 power button:
- Go to the Settings menu (by swiping down twice from the top of your phone and tapping on the gear button).
- Go to System > Gestures.
- Tap “Press and hold power button” at the bottom of the menu.
- Toggle “Hold for Assistant” off.
In addition, the Gestures menu contains a number of different options for using taps and other gestures that you may want to use. For example, you can configure Quick Tap (two taps on the back of the phone) to enable a variety of features, such as taking a screenshot, opening a specific app, or even accessing Google Assistant.
You can also set your camera to start by pressing the power button twice, return to the old-fashioned three-button navigation at the bottom of your screen, or put your phone face down to activate Do Not Disturb, among other options. All of these Android 12 features, as well as others, can be enabled or disabled in the Gestures menu.
